When I first moved to West Cork, I honestly couldn’t believe how many beautiful locations there were within such a small area. From long sandy beaches to rugged cliffs and peaceful woodland, it really is a dream for dog photography.
Over time (and many walks with my camera and my dogs), I’ve discovered some favourite spots that work beautifully for relaxed, natural dog photoshoots.

Before choosing a location, it’s helpful to think about the kind of experience you want.

Every dog photoshoot in West Cork is different, and the location plays a big part in how your photos will feel.
Why West Cork Is Perfect for a Dog Photoshoot
West Cork has something that makes dog photography feel easy.
There’s space.
There’s quiet.
And there’s nature everywhere you look.
For most dogs, this means they can relax much faster than in a busy or unfamiliar environment. Instead of forcing poses, we can simply let them explore, play, and be themselves — which is where the magic really happens.
Another thing I love is the variety. You can have a beach session one day and a woodland session the next, and they feel completely different. From the moment I first came to West Cork, I fell in love with the landscape. I can't picture myself anywhere else any more.

My Favourite Dog Photoshoot Locations in West Cork
These are the places I come back to again and again. Not just because they’re beautiful, but because they work for dogs. And they are also the perfect locations for a Holiday Photoshoot.
Owenahincha Beach (near Rosscarbery)
This is one of my go-to locations.
It’s wide, open, and gives dogs plenty of space to run and play. The sand dunes add a lot of variety, so your photos won’t all look like they were taken in the same spot.
Early mornings here are especially lovely. They are quiet, soft light, and just a really peaceful start to the day.
I did a lovely photoshoot with a couple and their Jack Russell on this beach on a chilly Sunday morning in March. Their photos show cliffs, sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. The photos became a wonderful memory of a special day.

Long Strand
Long Strand feels a bit wilder and more untouched.
It’s usually quieter than other beaches, which makes it perfect for dogs that need a bit more space or get distracted easily.
The light in the evening here is beautiful, soft and golden, with the ocean stretching out in the background.
Galley Head
If you love a more dramatic look, Galley Head is stunning.
You’ve got cliffs, ocean views, and that real Wild Atlantic feeling. It’s not the kind of place where dogs can run freely, but it works beautifully for calmer dogs or those who stay on the lead.
It’s one of those locations where the scenery really adds something powerful to the photos.
Warren Beach
Warren Beach is a bit of a mix. It has a beach, greenery, and easy access.
It’s a great option if you’re looking for something simple and relaxed, especially for couples or families bringing their dog along. A bonus would be the cliff walk, which adds more scenery to your photos.
It’s also a nice starting point if your dog is new to photoshoots or if you have an older dog who can't walk very far.
Gougane Barra Forest
This is completely different from the beach, and that’s exactly why I love it.
If your dog prefers a calmer, enclosed environment, the forest can be the perfect setting. It’s peaceful, quiet, and especially beautiful in autumn when the colours start to change.
It creates a softer, more intimate feeling in your photos.
Kilbritain Woods
If you are looking for a woodland area and maybe some splashy water photos, then Kilbritain Woods might be the right place for you. You don't need to walk far from the parking to have a nice setup for the photoshoot.
There are nice trees, greenery, bridges, picnic tables and a river all at the beginning. Because everything is so close, it is a perfect location if you have a dog that can't walk very far anymore. Or the owner has movement problems.
Your dog does need to be used to other dogs, as this is a very common walking place.

Barley Cove on the Mizen Peninsula
I love the Mizen Peninsula in West Cork. It has many great places, but Barley Cove is a particularly good one for photography sessions.
From the parking lot, you start with a huge dune area where many people walk their dogs. If you have a hunting-type dog that loves to chase rabbits, it is better to skip this part and head straight to the beach.
Because of water flowing in and out of the lake, you don't only have the beach, but right before you get there is a quieter part with water, sand and dunes that will make a perfect background for your photos. And the stunning surrounding hills only make this a bonus.
Castle Freak Woodlands
In spring, these woods are home to the most stunning Bleubells and are great for a Bleubell photography session. You can see the pictures of a puppy that I took there recently.
But even outside this season, Castle Freak has plenty to offer. During the session, we can go for a little walk through the woods and take photos as we go.
Hidden Gems
There are also a few lesser-known spots I sometimes use, depending on the dog and the kind of session you’re looking for. Sometimes I know a quiet little cove or woodland area that would be perfect for your dog photoshoot. We can talk this through in our planning conversation.
How to Choose the Right Location for Your Dog
Not every location suits every dog, and that’s completely okay.
When I help clients choose a location, I usually think about:
- Energy level (do they love running or prefer calm walks?)
- Recall (can they be off-lead or not?)
- Personality (confident, nervous, easily distracted?)
There’s always a location that will suit your dog best; it’s just about finding the right match.
Best Time of Day for a Dog Photoshoot
The timing of your session makes a big difference.
Early mornings are often my favourite. The beaches are quiet, the light is soft, and everything feels calm.
Evenings can be just as beautiful, especially with warmer tones and that golden glow. But busier in those nice summer evenings.
Midday can be a bit harsher in terms of light and busier locations, so I usually avoid it where possible.
Of course… this is Ireland, so we always stay a bit flexible with the weather
Tips for a Relaxed Dog Photoshoot
A few simple things can make your photoshoot feel much easier:
- Bring your dog’s favourite treats or toy
- Wear neutral, natural colours
- Don’t worry if your dog doesn’t “behave perfectly”
- Focus on enjoying the moment
