There is something special about every dog photo shoot, but when your model for the day is a three-month-old puppy named Scout, the day becomes even more special. This was actually Scout's very first visit to the woods, and I was lucky enough to capture it with my camera.
Every stage of a puppy's life seems to pass in the blink of an eye. One moment, they are tiny fluff balls discovering the world for the first time, and before you know it, they have grown into adolescent dogs who suddenly seem to have forgotten everything they ever learned about recall.
That is exactly why I believe puppy photography is so important. These early months are filled with firsts, and they disappear far too quickly.
Because I know how fast this stage flies by from my own Jack Russell, Abbey (who used to sleep on our shoulders when she was tiny), I created a special puppy photography package designed to capture those precious early stages before they are gone forever.

Meet Scout: A Bluebell Photoshoot Story
Scout was only three months old when he stepped in front of my camera.
I know. Very cute.
When I arrived at the location, his owner told me it was actually his first trip to the woods. Despite being somewhere completely new, Scout bravely came over to say hello and even allowed me a little cuddle before we started.
Puppies do not have the same stamina as adult dogs, so I always keep puppy photoshoots shorter and more relaxed. This session lasted around thirty minutes, which was plenty of time for Scout to explore without becoming overwhelmed.
Luckily, the bluebell woodland was only a short walk away. Even getting there was part of the adventure, with Scout stopping every few steps to investigate new smells and sights.
For such a young puppy, he already knew a few tricks, including a lovely sit and coming over when his owner called his name. Watching puppies move is always entertaining. Their legs seem far too long for their bodies, and they have not quite worked out where everything belongs yet.
Scout was no exception.
But that gangly puppy stage is exactly what makes these photographs so special.
Why the First Year Matters So Much
One of the biggest reasons I encourage people to book a puppy photoshoot is that puppies change so quickly.
During the first year alone, your puppy will go through enormous changes in:
- appearance
- size
- coat texture
- confidence
- personality
The tiny puppy who follows you everywhere will slowly develop into an independent young dog with their own habits, quirks and character.
Those changes are wonderful to watch, but they also make the puppy stage incredibly short.
Our own Abbey loved getting under our sideboard. While she grew, this became harder and harder to do until she almost got stuck under there. For a while, I had to close it off so she would be safe. It just showed us how fast she was growing.
Why Spring Is Perfect for Puppy Photography in Ireland
Although puppy photoshoots can take place throughout the year, spring has always been one of my favourite seasons.
The fresh green leaves, soft light and carpets of bluebells create a magical setting that perfectly suits young puppies.
Bluebells bring a sense of wonder to photographs. They transform an ordinary woodland into something that feels almost enchanted.
For curious puppies like Scout, they also provide a wonderful environment to explore while creating beautiful photographs at the same time.
What If My Puppy Won't Sit Still?
This is probably the question I hear most often.
And honestly?
I do not expect puppies to sit still.
Puppies are supposed to explore, sniff, investigate and occasionally become distracted by absolutely everything around them.
That is completely normal.
A successful puppy photoshoot is not about perfect obedience. It is about capturing your puppy's personality exactly as they are right now.
Some of my favourite photographs happen in between the planned moments, when a puppy suddenly tilts their head, runs towards their owner or investigates something interesting in the grass.

Those little moments often tell the story better than any perfect pose.
When Should You Book a Puppy Photoshoot?
There is no single perfect age, but some stages are particularly lovely to photograph.
8–16 Weeks
Tiny, fluffy and full of curiosity.
This is often the stage people wish they had photographed before it disappeared.
Around 6 Months
Your puppy is growing rapidly and their personality is becoming more visible.
Around 1 Year
The puppy stage is almost over, but they still have that youthful energy and expression.
Many owners choose to document more than one stage through a puppy photography package so they can look back on the full journey.
Why Puppy Photos Become More Valuable Over Time
At first, photographs feel like a lovely way to remember a fun day out.
Years later, they become something much more meaningful.
They remind you of how tiny your puppy once was. The way they looked at you. The way they explored the world. The stage where every walk felt like a new adventure.
As dog owners, we know our time with them is never long enough.
That is why preserving these early memories matters so much.
