And I completely understand why. Clothing can make a huge difference in how your photos feel and look, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.
I’ve helped dog owners choose outfits that feel natural, comfortable, and timeless. In this blog, I’ll guide you through what works best for a dog photoshoot in Ireland so that you can feel confident and relaxed on the day.
Why What You Wear Matters in Dog Photography
Your outfit sets the tone of your photos.
It can make your images feel:
- calm and natural
- warm and emotional
- or busy and distracting
The goal is not to “dress up perfectly”, but to create a look that complements:
- your dog
- the location
- and the overall atmosphere
I’ve seen beautiful moments slightly lost because an outfit felt too busy, and on the other hand, I’ve seen the simplest outfits create the most timeless images.
Choose Natural, Neutral Colours
This is always my first piece of advice.
Colours like:
- beige
- cream
- soft greens
- browns
- muted blues
work beautifully in outdoor locations around Ireland.
They blend naturally with:
- beaches
- woodland
- fields
and keep the focus on what really matters, you and your dog.

Avoid Busy Patterns and Bright Colours
It can be tempting to wear something bold, but bright colours and strong patterns can quickly take attention away from your connection. And they are more likely to go out of fashion.
Try to avoid:
- large logos
- neon colours
- heavy prints
Simple always wins in photography.
Think About Your Dog’s Colour
This is something many people don’t consider, but it makes a big difference.
For example:
a black dog → lighter clothing works beautifully
a light-coloured dog → slightly darker tones can add contrast
You don’t need to match your dog exactly, just make sure you don’t completely blend in.
For example, both my doggies are white with brown spots. If I were to wear a busy motive next to them, it would destroy the photo. Where solid colors complement them.
Dress for the Location (and the Irish Weather)
Ireland has its own personality when it comes to weather…
For beach photoshoots in West Cork:
- think flowy layers
- comfortable shoes
- something you don’t mind getting a bit sandy
For woodland sessions:
- slightly warmer tones
- layers for warmth
- practical footwear
And always bring:
✔ an extra layer
✔ something warm
✔ flexibility
For the best daylight, photoshoots often happen early mornings at sunrise or at sunset. It can still be very chilly, and you never know what to expect from the weather. But they always make the best magical sessions.
Keep It Comfortable and “You”
This might be the most important tip.
If you don’t feel like yourself in your outfit, it will show in the photos.
You don’t need to dress like someone else; just a slightly more refined version of your everyday style is perfect. You should feel like yourself.
Coordinating Outfits (Without Matching)
If you’re coming as a couple or family:
Instead of matching outfits exactly, aim for:
- colours that complement each other
- similar tones and textures
