That was exactly the case for this lovely couple, whom I had the pleasure of photographing on a beautiful Sunday morning at Owenahincha Beach near Rosscarbery.

This couple brought along their 8-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Tyrion. From the moment his paws touched the sand, it was clear he was going to have the best day ever. Tyrion loves digging holes, and he certainly created quite a few! He was also very enthusiastic about chasing stones across the beach.
Sitting still and posing perfectly was not high on Tyrion’s list of priorities, but that is completely fine. The magic of dog photography often happens when dogs are simply allowed to be themselves.
The Location: A Beach in West Cork
In my experience, the best time for a couple photoshoot with your dog in Cork is early in the morning. At that time, the beaches in West Cork are often quiet and peaceful, and the soft morning light is perfect for photography.
For this session, we chose Owenahincha Beach. It’s one of my favourite locations because of its variety. Within a short walk you can find dramatic cliffs, rolling sand dunes, rocky areas and wide open beaches facing the Wild Atlantic Ocean.
This variety means that the photographs all feel different, even though they are taken in the same location.
How We Made the Dog Comfortable During the Photoshoot
Choosing an early morning session also meant there were very few other dogs around. Tyrion usually needs to stay on the lead when other dogs are nearby, so this gave him the freedom to run and explore without his harness.
The best way to make a dog comfortable during a photoshoot is simple: give them time to play.
Tyrion clearly preferred running and digging over sitting still for long periods. So whenever we asked him to pose for a moment, we kept it brief before letting him run off again. Those playful moments between the couple and Tyrion actually created some of the most natural and joyful photographs from the session.
Often, the best images come from interaction rather than perfect posing.
