If you’re anything like me, your dog is your adventure buddy. Always ready to explore the great outdoors. But as many dog owners know, finding the perfect dog-friendly walking places to do a photoshoot in West Cork can be a bit of a challenge. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to the best dog-friendly walks in the region, so you and your four-legged friend can make the most of your time in this beautiful part of Ireland.
All of these locations welcome dogs, although leads are required in some areas. Always respect local guidelines, stay on marked paths where requested, and leave no trace.

Beaches
Long Strand
Long Strand is a favourite among local dog walkers, and it’s easy to see why. With its vast expanse of sand and dramatic sand dunes, it’s the perfect spot for a brisk stroll or a playful run. Swimming is not advised here due to strong rip currents, but the good news is that dogs are welcome year-round, making it an ideal dog-friendly walk in West Cork.
Inchydoney Beach
At low tide, Inchydoney offers an expansive sandy stretch where your dog can roam freely. You can also explore the surrounding dunes. While this beach is incredibly popular during the summer months, visiting in the off-season means fewer crowds and a more relaxed experience. Keep a close eye on tide times, though. It’s easy to get caught out if you're not paying attention.
Red Strand
Red Strand is my personal favourite dog-friendly walk in West Cork. Although the beach is small, it more than makes up for it with breathtaking views of the cliffs and Galley Head Lighthouse. At low tide, you can enjoy a good 30-minute walk and even let your dog have a splash in the sea. Just note that during peak summer days, dogs are restricted from the beach.
Barleycove Beach
Located on the Mizen Peninsula, Barleycove is well worth the journey. This stunning beach, complete with rolling dunes and a meandering river, offers one of the most scenic dog-friendly walks in West Cork. From the main car park, follow the unique floating walkway to reach the beach. Dogs are allowed year-round on designated areas. Just check the signage when you arrive.
Warren Beach
Warren Beach may be small, but it’s full of charm. Surrounded by rugged cliffs and blessed with panoramic views, it’s a picturesque setting for a walk. It can get busy in summer, so arriving early is recommended. Don’t miss the cliff path, which extends towards Owenahincha, or the peaceful dunes behind the golf course.
Broadstrand Beach
Tucked away near Timoleague, Broadstrand is a more sheltered alternative, protected from south-west winds. It’s perfect for swimming or a leisurely walk along the soft sand. This beach tends to be quieter than those closer to Clonakilty, making it a peaceful choice for a dog-friendly outing.
Owenahincha Beach
This is one of my go-to locations.
It’s wide, open, and gives dogs plenty of space to run and play. The sand dunes add a lot of variety, so your photos won’t all look like they were taken in the same spot.
Early mornings here are especially lovely. They are quiet, soft light, and just a really peaceful start to the day.
I did a lovely photoshoot with a couple and their Jack Russell on this beach on a chilly Sunday morning in March. Their photos show cliffs, sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. The photos became a wonderful memory of a special day.
Best Dog-Friendly Woodland Walks to do a photoshoot in West Cork
West Cork isn’t just about stunning beaches. The woodlands here offer some of the most scenic and rewarding dog-friendly walks you could hope for. From riverside trails to forest loops and cliffside adventures, there’s something for every kind of walker and every kind of dog.
So grab the lead, pack a treat or two, and explore the best woodland spots for a dog-friendly walk in West Cork.
Courtmacsherry Coast Loop
Springtime brings a carpet of bluebells to Courtmacsherry, but this coastal woodland loop is beautiful all year round. It’s a varied and enjoyable trail that takes you through the forest, along field edges, and across cliffs with sea views. The ever-changing terrain makes this loop an exciting dog-friendly walk in West Cork and a great way to keep both you and your dog engaged.
Castlefreke Woodlands
Just inland from Long Strand, Castlefreke offers peaceful forest trails ideal for anything from a quick 30-minute stroll to a longer two-hour ramble. You can also combine this walk with a visit to the beach for a full day out with your dog. The woodland paths here are well-maintained, making it a versatile option for a relaxed yet scenic dog-friendly walk.
This was also the perfect location for a photoshoot in Bleubells with a young pup.
Dromillihy Forest
Tucked away and less well-known, Dromillihy Forest is a hidden gem. The walk is short but steep in places, perfect for a bit of a challenge. Your dog will love the winding paths, small river, fairy houses and woodland magic. However, it’s not ideal for dogs with limited mobility or for pushchairs, as the terrain is quite rugged.
Rineen Woods
Located near Skibbereen, Rineen Woods offers a tranquil 50-minute forest loop, perfect if you’re after something quiet and relatively flat. It’s often overlooked on lists of the best dog-friendly walks in West Cork, but it absolutely deserves a mention. The trail passes the remnants of a Famine-era wall, adding a touch of local history to your stroll.
Butter Road
For something more adventurous, head to the Butter Road — an old route running from Ballydehob to Schull. Stretching over 10 km, it crosses scenic hills and farmlands. Dogs must stay on the lead, but the views and peacefulness make it well worth it. The route is one-way, so plan your return accordingly, or do what I did: walk a loop by combining part of the Butter Road with quiet back roads around Schull.
Drimoleague Heritage Walkways
I discovered these walkways by accident, and what a find! One especially picturesque stretch follows the River Ilen, with lots of inviting spots for a quick doggy paddle. The loop takes around two hours to complete and is generally easy going, though there are a few short, steep sections. It’s a lovely trail to explore with a dog that enjoys a longer outing.
Glengarriff Woods
A must-visit for any dog owner, Glengarriff Woods is one of the top spots for a dog-friendly walk in West Cork. There are multiple looped trails here, ranging from 25 to 90 minutes, so you can tailor your visit to suit your mood and energy level. The short walk to the waterfall is especially scenic, and many of the routes offer panoramic views of the surrounding hills.
Dunboy Forest
Near Castletownbere on the Beara Peninsula, Dunboy Forest surrounds the grounds of Dunboy Castle and offers a peaceful, scenic woodland walk. While part of the trail crosses farmland where dogs aren’t permitted, the accessible section is more than worth the visit. The views over the bay to Bere Island are truly breathtaking, and the forest itself is a popular spot for local dog walkers.
