There is something special about photographing dogs at the beach. The open space, the sound of the waves and the freedom to explore often bring out their true personalities. And that is exactly what I love capturing in my dog photography sessions.

For this particular dog photoshoot in West Cork, I met two beautiful Labradors at Harbour View Beach. A male and a female, each with their own personality, but both sharing something rather special: they are companion dogs who help bring comfort and calm to people experiencing mental health difficulties.

This made the photoshoot about more than creating beautiful portraits. It was also an opportunity to celebrate two dogs who make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Meet the Labradors: Two Personalities, One Special Connection

One of my favourite things about photographing dogs is discovering their individual personalities. Even dogs of the same breed can be completely different, and these two Labradors were no exception.

The female Labrador was particularly playful and full of energy. With the beach and the water right in front of her, there were plenty of opportunities to capture her adventurous side.

Where as the male dog was a little older and calmer. He was such a special dog that deserved his day in the spotlight. They were playing together and loved chasing a ball. But the photo of where you see them both running through the water is my most memorable photo of this photoshoot.

When photographing multiple dogs, I always try to capture what makes each of them unique. Sometimes that means creating a quiet portrait, and sometimes it means following them as they run, play and enjoy themselves.

For me, both sides are equally important.

More Than Companions: Dogs Who Make a Difference

What made this photoshoot particularly meaningful was learning about the important role these Labradors have in people's lives.

Both dogs are companions who help people experiencing mental health difficulties find comfort and calm. Dogs can offer companionship, reassurance and a comforting presence, and these two have a special role in supporting the people they spend time with.

I think it's easy to underestimate just how much animals can mean to us. They become part of our everyday lives, share our routines and offer companionship in ways that are sometimes difficult to put into words.

I didn't know about their special task until right before the start of the photoshoot, but I knew instantly that these 2 dogs deserved to be in the spotlight for once. Being a companion for people with mental health difficulties is such an important job, and I only wish dogs were allowed to do more of this.

Photographing these two Labradors was a lovely reminder that every dog has a story worth telling.

Why Harbour View Beach Is a Beautiful Location for Dog Photography

For this session, we chose Harbour View Beach in West Cork.

The beach offers a wonderful natural setting for dog portraits, with its sandy shoreline, open views, the beautiful Atlantic coastline and the wetland area on the other side of the dunes.

I love working in natural locations because they give dogs the opportunity to explore their surroundings. Rather than expecting them to sit perfectly still throughout the entire session, I can work with their behaviour and capture a mixture of relaxed portraits and spontaneous moments.

And for these two Labradors, the water was definitely part of the experience!

We created a mixture of individual portraits and photographs of the dogs playing on the beach and in the water.

This Golden Hour photoshoot was in September, and we started at 6.45 am. The sunrise gave the most lovely colours, and the soft golden glow is perfect for portraits. Because one of the dogs is black, you don't need a bright, sunny afternoon to take photos, as bright light will completely wash out the dog's colour. That's why I am always happy when people are willing to meet me so early in the morning.

Another bonus is that you still find the beach empty.

These little details are part of what makes every photoshoot different.

Can You Have a Photoshoot with Two Dogs?

Absolutely!

If you have more than one dog, you might wonder whether it's possible to capture beautiful photographs of them together, especially when they have different personalities or energy levels.

The answer is yes, although a little patience and flexibility are always helpful.

During a photoshoot with two dogs, I like to create a combination of photographs:

  • Individual portraits, giving each dog their own moment in front of the camera.
  • Photographs together, capturing their connection and the way they interact.
  • Natural action photographs, showing their playful personalities while running, exploring or enjoying the water.

Not every dog needs to be perfectly trained or know lots of commands. My approach to dog photography is relaxed and centred around the individual dog.

Sometimes the most memorable photographs happen when we allow dogs to be themselves.

These two Labradors were a dream to capture. Due to their special job, they are very well trained. That makes taking the portraits very easy, but we did have to start out with these. The owner warned me that they would jump in the water as soon as they saw it. (Which they did!)

And because they love playing in the water so much with a ball is was very easy, I just had to wait and capture the special moments.

Capturing Memories That Last

Every dog has their own story, and every relationship we share with an animal is unique.

For these two Labradors, their story includes not only their playful personalities and love of the beach, but also the comfort and companionship they bring to others.

That is what makes dog photography so meaningful to me. It's not just about creating a beautiful image. It's about capturing the character, spirit and little details that make each dog special.

And whether your dog is an energetic Labrador who loves the sea or a quieter companion who prefers staying close to you, those moments deserve to be remembered.
